Expert advice – suspension and steering check-up

General Information · 02-06-2026

When riders talk about performance upgrades, they often think about engines, exhausts or electronics. But one of the most important elements of motorcycle performance is something unrelated to power – properly set up and well-maintained steering and suspension.

Steering does more than simply point the motorcycle where you want to go. It provides vital feedback from the front tyre, helping you feel grip levels and understand what the bike is doing underneath you. That feedback builds rider confidence, which is essential whether you are commuting, riding twisty roads or tackling a dirt trail or track.

Steering performance also directly affects braking, cornering and stability. If the steering system is poorly adjusted or worn, the bike can feel vague, heavy or unstable, especially when braking into corners or riding at speed.

Suspension plays an equally critical role. Suspension that is in good condition and set up correctly – either within factory specifications or adjusted to suit the rider’s weight and riding needs – provides stability, comfort and traction. Good suspension also reduces rider fatigue and allows the bike to handle the way the manufacturer intended. These principles apply equally to road and off-road motorcycles.

Routine maintenance is key. Steering-head bearings should be checked and adjusted at every service, lubricated as recommended by the manufacturer and replaced if they become notchy, stiff or develop free play. Tyre pressures should always be maintained according to factory recommendations, as incorrect pressures can significantly affect handling and braking.

Correct wheel alignment is also essential. After adjusting the chain, ensure the rear wheel is centred and aligned properly. Suspension should be within correct static sag levels, leak free and operating smoothly without feeling overly stiff or excessively bouncy.

Other components also play a role in overall chassis performance. Swingarm pivots and suspension linkages need to be properly lubricated and maintained, while wheel bearings should spin freely and be kept well lubricated.

As Eric Portelli, Head Ducati Technician at Worthington Motorcycles, explains, “Correctly set up steering and suspension transforms the way a motorcycle feels. When everything is adjusted and maintained properly, the bike is more stable, more predictable and far more enjoyable to ride, and correctly set tyre pressures are a crucial element. In fact, the most important thing an owner can do that greatly affects handling is maintain correct tyre pressures”.

For riders, the takeaway is simple: a well-maintained chassis doesn’t just improve handling, it makes every ride safer, smoother and more enjoyable.
